John Pennekamp, founded in 1963, is the first underwater park in the United States. The park extends three miles into the Atlantic Ocean and is spectacular. These areas were created to protect and preserve part of the only living coral reef in the continental United States. The park was added to the national historic site in 1972. The park is named after the late Miami news editor whose efforts contributed to the creation of the John Pennekamp and the preservation of the later state park.
