Hotel Shattuck Plaza Located in a historic, mission-oriented building, Berkeley's top hotel. Its name pays tribute to Francis K. Shattuck, a representative of the California State Assembly, a former Oakland mayor, and an important figure in Berkeley's early history. Hotel Shattuck Plaza was originally named Shatak Hotel, designed by architect Benjamin McDougall, and opened for the first time in 1910. The project was built near Shatak's former manor, approved by his widow Rosa, and was established in his memory. Over the years, it has undergone a series of changes: an outbuilding was built in 1914; a covered arcade was added in 1926; and a large-scale renovation was completed in 2009.
