About Hakone
Hakone gardens were once the private property of philanthropists Isabel and Oliver Stine of San Francisco. When Mrs. Stine and her husband took part in the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, they were captivated by the unique beauty of Japanese gardens and Eastern concepts. At that world's fair, the Japanese pavilion was one of the largest and most magnificent. The Japanese exhibits at the Exposition captivated and inspired Isabel Stine to design a Japanese garden for her own summer home. She went to Japan and named her garden after the town, which is in their National Park. Hakone garden design most likely took its inspiration from the grounds of the nearby Fujia Hotel. The Stines bought 15 acres of land in the hills of Saratoga in May 1915 to use as their second home.
