The YMCA was the site of the YMCA in Athens from 1889 to 1919, and the original buildings on the site became the music store, cinema, hotel, freemason church, furniture company and Sears Roebuck store before being replaced by the elite theater in 1935. As a methodist church, the theatre (later renamed Georgia Theatre) was an important venue for new and established musicians from Athens and beyond. On June 19, 2009, the historic concert hall was destroyed in a fire and was rebuilt as a product of love and a celebration of Athens' long-standing spirit of innovation. Special thanks to the people of Athens and all who worked so hard to restore her status and make her a better person, Georgia Theatre is proudly reborn.
