Essence Music Festival, known as the "purposeful Party", is an annual music festival that began in 1995 and is a one-off event for the 25th anniversary of Quintessence, a magazine focused on African-American women. Essence Music Festival is the biggest celebration of African-American culture and music in the United States. Known locally as the "essence Festival," it has been held in New Orleans, Louisiana since 1994, and was held in Houston, Texas in 2006 because of the impact of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans.
