Economy Candy was originally a shoe and hat repair shop with a cart outside selling candy. When the great depression hit in the 1930s, candy trucks brought more business than shoe stores, and in 1937, candy stores became budget candy stores. When Morris Moishe Cohen and his brother-in-law returned from world war ii, they took over the company and expanded into selling candy, chocolate, gift baskets, dried fruit, nuts and more. When Economy Candy was in its original location on the corner of rivington and Essex, morris had to take candy and big bags of fruit and nuts outside. He stood outside all day, rain or shine, zero or 90 degrees, chatting with customers and smoking cigars. His son jerry works with his two sisters and his mother every day after school and on weekends.
