As early as 1983, when 21-year-old Mark Carter built a shelter for a weekend rowing competition on the Colorado River, he realized that he missed several parts of the team's patchwork canopy. With temperatures over 110 degrees and no shade, E-Z UP's founder envisioned a portable pop-up shelter that didn't require loose parts and could be built quickly and easily. The next day, E-Z UP's founder began researching his ideas in his parents' garage in Southern California. With the growing demand for instant shelters Mark grew up in his parents' garage and was introduced to Brad Smith by a friend.
