The Otago central railway branches from Wingatui, the main southern island road, 12km south of Dunedin, through Middlemarch, Ranfurly, Omakau and Alexandra to Cromwell in the centre of Otago, 235km from Junction. The route is selected from the seven routes proposed in 1877, as it opens up the largest area of the Crown Lands, presents the least engineering difficulties and is the most direct route to Dunedin. By the mid-1870s, the otago gold rush had passed and attention was focused on the agricultural and pastoral potential of Dunedin's hinterland. As they all know, roads are terrible, and railways are considered the best way to improve traffic and communication. Dunedin Railways is 72 per cent owned by Dunedin City Holdings Limited (100 per cent owned by the Dunedin City Council). The remaining 28% of Dunedin Railways owned by Otago Excursion Train all Trust.
