In order to highlight the history of the automotive industry and to boost tourism in the region, the Oshawa Chamber of Commerce founded the Canadian Automotive Museum as a community initiative in 1962. At the time, some well-known Oshawa locals contributed money or offered loans with no interest in order to buy a former auto dealership on Simcoe Street. It was transformed into a location for the display of vintage cars and related antiques. Canadian Automotive Museum began operations in 1963 and was officially established as a nonprofit, not-for-profit organization in October 1964. Jackson Motor Company is listed as the tenant of the freshly built building in the 1921 Oshawa City Directory, which is the oldest known instance of an automotive dealership being at 99 Simcoe St. South.
