CVSA is responsible for coordinating all matters concerning automotive transportation and highway safety management, regulations and controls. Members include representatives of provincial and territorial governments and the Canadian federal government. It supports the vision of its members for the safest and most efficient road transport of people and goods in the world. They are the custodians of national safety regulations, and they provide collaborative leadership in areas such as road safety research and policy, drivers and vehicles, compliance and regulatory affairs. The origin of CVSA dates back to 1940, when the four western provinces met to consider issues of common interest related to road transport. In the early 1950s, Ontario and Yukon joined the organization.
