Butchart Gardens begins with a woman's vision and passion. Robert and Jenny Butchart from Ontario moved to Vancouver Island and built a cement plant on the rich limestone of Todd Bay. As cement production exhausted limestone deposits, Jenny envisioned a large garden here and began to transport topsoil in wagons. The quarry has developed little by little into today's sunken garden. Between 1906 and 1929, the Butters expanded their garden, designing a Japanese garden by the sea, an Italian garden on an old tennis court and a fragrant rose garden. Today, Butchart Gardens is the national historical site of Canada. As you stroll through the garden, you will find the remains of the original cement factory and millions of cushion plants of more than 900 varieties waiting for you.
