In 1973, Don and Sally Dean founded the Boston Stoker in Englewood, Ohio. To build a customer base in the new business, the deans began to provide customers with free freshly brewed specialty coffees while they were shopping. As Boston's Stoke tobacco industry grows, so does the demand for coffee. In 1983, Tang bought a Probat coffee roaster capable of roasting 5 kg at a time. It was intentionally installed at their Fairborn plant so that customers could see and focus on the freshness and quality of the product. By the mid-1980s, coffee was increasingly part of Boston Stoker, and a larger roaster was soon needed.
