Bishop's Pumpkin Farm was founded by Bill Bishop and Sandy Bishop, who moved to Wheatland, California in 1971, buying 40 acres of land and a run-down farm in the small-town of 1415 Pumpkin. Bill grew corn, alfalfa, soybeans and pigs on rented land nearby; but in 1973, Sandy convinced him that pumpkin was the right choice. Field trips were popular, and Bill and Sandy quickly learned that many children wanted to bring their families back on the weekends. An old farm carriage was used to ride a hay cart, and the children's pony was saddled and tied to a tree for self-riding. The farm continues to grow from there. Bill retired in 2004 and Sandy retired in 2013. Bishop's Pumpkin Farm is now run by Wayne and his wife Ann, and their two children, Austin Bishop and Megan Sanderson.
