Balance Rock Inn is a summer "hut" built in 1903 for Scottish railway tycoon Alexander Maitland and his family. The original home was conserved as an elegant Balanced Rock Hotel. The premier hotel in Bar Harbor, Maine, is named after "Balanced Rock." This is a rare geological formation that seems to pass by the side of the scenic coastal path. A slender stone fulcrum is balanced against gravity. This lovely tile-style mansion was designed by famous Boston architects Andrews, Jacques and Rantouil, a company used by many wealthy summer residents of Bar Harbor at the turn of the century. Balance Rock Inn's multiple corridors and hidden stairs lead to endless untold stories.
