About Andy And Bax
World War II just ended in 1945, Andy And Bax opened under the name "Great Hawthorne Surplus" and sold wartime surpluses, guns, ammunition, tarpaulins, rubber life rafts and almost anything you can think of. In 1956, they moved to the 1234 S.E. Alliance and changed their name to Andy And Bax. They began to convert old military rubber boats into white water boats. In 1969, the building suffered a Class 4 fire and was razed to the ground. Five months later, they reopened at the current 324 SE Grand Ave and Oak st. During the 1970s and 1980s, they helped build whitewater rafting sites in the Pacific Northwest, and it was not until the early 1990s that Riken rafts were built. Today they still own one of the world's largest yacht showrooms and continue to bring new and old military and camping gear to the Greater Portland area.
