About Altus Times
Altus Times had a newspaper before it had a highway, railroad, or phone line to another community. Judge J. P. Orr started the first Altus newspaper on November 29, 1900, when he moved the entire Vernon (TX) Globe plant to Altus and started the Altus Weekly News. A railroad official by the name of Leger included the new community in the path of the railroad when it was being built close to Altus. If Leger included them, community leaders had promised to name their town after him. In the meantime, the Oklahoma City & Western Railroad, which is now the Frisco, came from the east, while the Kansas City, Mexican & Orient Railroad, which is now the Santa Fe, came from the north. The Altus Weekly News reverted to its previous title on July 4, 1904, when the town's name was changed once more to Altus. Altus Times, like many other small frontier towns, saw the establishment of numerous additional newspapers.
