The history of Al's Italian Beef dates back to 1938, when Al Ferrari and his sister and brother-in-law, Francis and Chris Passelli, developed the original Italian beef sandwich creations and recipes. The great Chicago sandwich was actually produced during the Great Depression due to lack of meat. To make the most of what they have, Chris and Ayre cut the meat thin and placed it on thick, fresh Italian bread. The original recipe was developed in Al's Italian Beef family kitchen and is still used in all stores. The family sold delicious sandwiches at nearby food stalls and then sent them to local stores until they opened a branch in West Tyler Street in Chicago.
