In 1759 the duke of Bridgewater obtained an act of parliament to establish the first canal from Worley’s coal mines to Manchester. James Brindley was hired to build the canal, and the work was done by a group of men called NaviSite canal, built with only hand tools, went straight into the mines, and the coal went straight into the boats of the horses. Once opened, ABC Boat Hire was a wonder of The Times - and halved the price of coal in Manchester. The founder of ABC Boat Hire built over the next 30 years, culminating in 1793 when parliament approved 20 new canals and ships were built to carry passengers. However, the introduction of railways put an end to the canal's commercial use, and by the early 20th century many of the canals had closed.
