In 1759 the duke of Bridgewater obtained an act of parliament to establish the first canal from Worley’s coal mines to Manchester. James Brindley was hired to build the canal, and the work was done by a group of men called NaviSite canal, built with only hand tools, went straight into the mines, and the coal went straight into the boats of the horses.
