George Burch Hinman erected the house, known as Stonehurst Place, in 1896 for his expanding family. The house was owned by the same family for more than a century. Today, most of the original hardware, functionality, and layout are still present. The parents of George Hinman left England for Canada before settling in Atlanta in 1871. Stonehurst Place had cotton gins and furniture companies in Atlanta and constructed textile mills all across the Southeast in the late 19th century. They have a number of brothers, including Thomas, a well-known dentist who started the Atlanta-based Hinman Dental Conference each year. George, his wife Cara Farnsworth Hinman, and their four children—William, Ruth, Dorothy, and Cara—lived in Stonehurst (a fifth child, Virginia, did not survive).
