Travis Thein and John Porter, two friends and avid gardeners, established the small Minneapolis-based business Sol Soils in the summer of 2021. During the pandemic of 2020, Travis became quite interested in cactus and succulents. He soon found, however, that all the mainstream specialty soils on the market held far too much water for his indoor, potted plants. To assist his indoor plants flourish, the idea was to develop faster-draining mediums. Since then, he has routinely spoken with botanists and soil specialists to enhance the mixtures. Upon visiting a cactus nursery in Palm Springs, John became captivated and amazed by the entire process, and the two decided to start a company to share these blends with more people.
