Seguin Gardens began in 2009 with a goal of providing employment for those with developmental impairments. It was named after Edouard Seguin, a Frenchman who educated students with cognitive difficulties in the 1800s. Being a social enterprise of UCP Seguin of Greater Chicago, they try to create an enjoyable and supportive work environment as well as a location where their community may visit and take advantage of what they have to offer. They search for and support small local businesses and organizations that represent a variety of communities in addition to their own offerings, especially if those groups are underrepresented elsewhere. Their Seguin Gardens initiative is a vital component of their aim to employ people with disabilities. In addition to other greenhouse tasks, their staff works with people who are taking part in seed beginning, propagating plants, and caring for them until they are ready for the sales floor.
