The Norwalk Seaport Association was founded in 1978 by a group of local citizens with a vision to revitalize Norwalk south and preserve Norwalk's Marine heritage. The first oyster festival is planned to raise awareness of the port of Norwalk and to raise money for the new organization. The association gained IRS 501 (C) (3) status in March 1980. The harbor became the catalyst for the development of the maritime center (now the Norwalk Marine aquarium), triggering the revival of southern Norwalk to this day. The Norwalk Seaport association is a founding member of the Marine aquarium and has a seat on its board of directors. To establish a maritime center, the Norwalk harbor society continued its mission by purchasing the Sheffield island lighthouse and the keeper's cottage in 1986. The lighthouse and cabin were added to the national register of historic places in 1989.
