Sawgrass Recreation Park used to be a fishing camp. In the next 30 years, it changed from a fishing camp to a boat cruise resort, and in the 1970s became one of the preferred destinations for South Florida New Century visitors. In 2005, shortly after the hurricane in Wilma, the Soverns family acquired it. Since then, the park has expanded its exhibition area to allow the adoption and rescue of more reptiles and mammals. Sawgrass Recreation Park also expanded community relations, provided annual scholarships to local students, and established partnerships with local schools to educate students about the Florida Everglades. Recently, this attraction has focused on ways to implement ecological initiatives in all aspects of operations. The exhibition area is developing new habitats to accommodate more and more reptiles.
