One of the first families-run companies in San Diego is called San Diego Hardware. Established in 1892, the first location's inventory included washboards, wood stoves, ice chests, sporting goods, and Winchester rifles in addition to the usual hardware items of the day. It was located on 5th Avenue in the heart of downtown. Four San Diego residents established San Diego Hardware, a new business, toward the end of 1892. The four individuals had previous hardware industry expertise. An article in the San Diego Union from January 1893 details the stock of the new store. A complete new stock of gas and oil stoves for heating and cooking has been introduced, along with a full line of agateware, galvanized ironware, and tinware. These additions are in addition to carrying a full line of builders' and shelf hardware.
