R Hanauer was founded in 1985 when Randy Hanauer, its owner, realized that the white pocket square was a niche market that needed a place in the menswear market. At the time, the only squares available were the "blow, not show" type, and, as Hanauer knew, a handkerchief was too big for a blazer breast pocket. Hanauer's knowledge of fabrics, design and colors, combined with his experience as a manufacturer's representative, made his new business possible. R Hanauer's first pocket square was designed by Hanauer and then cut, sewed and pressed with the help of a tailor on a machine that performed simulated hand-rolled edges on the square. Much pressing and packaging takes place on his table. He later opened a tailor shop in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to produce his products.
