About Orton Cones

The Standard Pyrometric Cone Company's founding in 1896 served as the foundation for the Orton Cones. Dr. Orton pioneered the development and application of scientific principles to the production of ceramics. He was chosen as the first chairman of The Ohio State University's Ceramic Engineering Department in 1894, the year the country's first ceramic engineering school opened. Dr. Orton saw the necessity for a calibrated visual instrument in the Orton Cones to quantify the quantity of heat work provided to ceramic goods throughout the firing process in order to confirm thermal processing. He created a number of pyrometric cones to fill this demand and founded the Standard Pyrometric Cone Company to produce the cones.
