Orthofeet Shoes was established in 1984, and Michael Bar acquired his MS in mechanical engineering from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, where he earned his Phd in biomedical engineering. The impetus for launching the firm, however, is what really tells the tale of their organization. When a missile struck his tank when he was a reserve soldier serving in Israel's Yom Kippur War in 1973, he lost his leg. This tragedy gave rise to Orthofeet Shoes.
