NC Transportation Museum is a historic site that was once home to the Southern Railway's largest steam locomotive repair facility in the Southeast and a museum that showcases the history of various transportation including railroad transportation, automobiles, aviation and more. Their historic buildings include the Barber Junction Depot, an authentic train station built in 1898 and serving as the museum's visitor center. The Bob Julien Roundhouse is the largest surviving roundhouse in North America and is also home to locomotives, passenger train cars and a full-size replica of the Wright Flyer. The huge back shop and steam locomotive were once overhauled here and now NC Transportation Museum houses past railcars, antique cars, fire trucks, and the restoration of Piedmont Airlines' Potomac Peace DC-3 as well as the flue shop with the museum's bumper-to-bumper car exhibit.
