Mountain House traces its origins to the meals they make for special forces. During the Vietnam conflict, the military made a request for a food that tasted better, lasted longer and weighed less than the old K and C rations. Their parent company Oregon Freeze Dry complied and won the contract. They immediately began making freeze-dried food rations for the army's remote patrols. Since then, they have continued to feed special forces and other parts of the military. As the war began to subside, they used their surplus rations for military surpluses and sporting goods stores, where they quickly sold out. In 1969, at that time they realized that the consumer need good taste, easy to preparation of freeze drying food and Mountain House was born.
