About Mountain Crossings
The historic stone building that houses Mountain Crossings is called the Walasi-Yi Interpretive Center and is lofty, cool, and breezy. The Civilian Conservation Corps started building it in 1934 and finished it in 1937, the same year that the Appalachian Trail was finished. Until the middle of the 1960s, the center was used as an inn and dining hall. In the 1970s, this historic building was nearly demolished, but some locals worked to keep it standing. It was finally reborn in 1983 as them, an outdoor retailer and Appalachian Trail gift store. The building is traversed by the A. T. Itself, marking the only covered section of the trail's more than 2100 miles. Mountain Crossings provides assistance to more than 2000 hikers traveling to Maine each year. Each year, the staff evaluates over 500 packs and returns over 9, 000 pounds of gear from the store.
