The purpose of Kindness Gems was to encourage acts of kindness. While pursuing a degree in both business and psychology at California Polytechnic State University, their founder, Julia Freifeld, interned as a crisis counselor for survivors of sexual violence at a number of San Luis Obispo, California, non-profit organizations. During her time there, she donated 10% of the proceeds from her simple jewelry designs to the organizations she worked for in order to raise funds for. Julia wanted to create a jewelry line that embodies the kindness that they all possess after realizing how wonderful it is to give back. She finally introduced the first Kindness Gems collection which was well-received by the local community, at the Cal Poly Spring Craft Sale in 2017. She quickly made her jewelry available to people in a variety of markets along the central coast of California, spreading the simple message that when you buy their jewelry, you should commit to doing good deeds.
