Free Geek is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to sustainably use technology, enable digital access, and provide education to create a community where people can reach their potential. Computers have helped it in many ways, but moving into the digital future is not without obstacles. Many people lack the resources to purchase a computer or obtain the training needed to use digital technology. At the same time, the rapid growth of technology consumption and turnover means that more than 2 million tons of hazardous electronic waste are generated in the United States every year. Its goal is to transfer technology that would otherwise be recycled or discarded, refurbish it, and then return it to the community for free or at low cost.
