Since 1921, Evergreen Lodge has been a vibrant part of the Yosemite Scenic Area. The cottage was originally developed to facilitate the construction of the Ochonesi Dam in the Hedge-Hedge Valley. Although there is no exact record, oral history suggests that the evergreen was established by a man who worked on the Hedge-Hedge Railway. That railway is mainly used to transport people and materials to and from the Hetch Hatch Dam construction site. In the early days, Evergreen Lodge was a post office, restaurant, and general store. Legend has it that moonlight was brewed in the basement of the hut during the prohibition. In the late 1920s, the evergreens were bought by Roy and Steyr Thornton, who built the main villa you know today. The cottage was sold to Dan and Angie Rovero in San Francisco in the mid-1930s.
