About Character
In 1993, a group of educators, researchers, and civic leaders gathered to form a national organization dedicated to fostering personality development in their schools and communities. Inspired by Sanford McDonald, the former CEO of McDonald Douglas, they established the Role Education Cooperation Organization. Since then, Character's mission has been to provide educators with the right to speak, visibility and resources to cultivate and support the school's culture, focusing on a series of core values and character advantages that are essential to the school's success. Character is widely known for its "School's 11 Principles Framework": a guide for cultivating a character-inspired culture, and a comprehensive framework developed by school leaders and character education researchers. In the past 20 years, after an independent and rigorous evaluation process, more than 800 schools have been recognized by Character.org as national character schools.
