About Bowne
The 19th-century letterpress printers Bowne are on display at the South Street Seaport Museum. They are a descendant, which was founded in 1775. Bowne was once the largest and oldest printing company in New York. It was one of hundreds of printing offices in lower Manhattan at the turn of the 19th century, printing the documents needed to facilitate shipping, trade, and finance in the booming port. Their brick-and-mortar store is unlike any other in New York City. It is housed in an 1839 warehouse that used to store cast iron stoves. They are proud to offer stationery, gifts, and more, many of which come from eco-friendly, small-batch, and local businesses. They produce their own line of printed goods with a large working collection of vintage printing presses, moveable type, illustrations, and other tools.
